Kah-Nee-Ta Resort is closing
July 08, 2018
An announcement was made on Friday that this summer the Kah-Nee-Ta Resort and Spa will permanently close after summer.
The resort and spa is owned by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and employs 146 people.
The official closing date is scheduled to be on September 5.
The employees received an announcement about the pending closure from the interim general manager, Marie Kay Williams. The employees were informed that the resort can no longer continue since it has not been profitable. To halt any future risk financially to the tribes, it will need to stop operations.
The layoff will affect 146 people. This includes those that work in the restaurant, spa, room service, maintenance, and administration.
The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs were given permission under a special act of Congress to purchase land back as part of their reservation. After that time the resort began being developed. It was built in stages over ten years from 1960 to 1970.
The resort offers 139 guest rooms. The rooms can cost as much as $389 per night. Guests also have the option of tepee rentals too as an alternative. There is also a golf course with 18 holes. Space for meetings. Also an RV park.
At one time there was also a casino. However, in 2012 it closed and the tribe then opened the Indian Head Casino. Originally it was estimated that the new casino would earn a revenue of $2 million to $4 million.
However, three years after the casino opened the tribal government underwent an internal investigation over the mismanagement of funds. The federal government was asked by the tribe to be involved in the investigation. Over ten years, $100 million was over spent due to poor management.
Reservations for the resort can be made through September 5.

It was built on tribal owned reservation land. Funding was provided by the tribe.
The tribal community will benefit from the new truck stop. It will serve as both a revenue earning business and as an employer for tribal members.
Two job fairs were held in January to fill positions for the 24 hour facility.
Every day, over 24 hours just under 10,000 vehicles drive on U.S. Highway 26 and pass Cherry Lane. This is an increase of traffic by 23 percent since 2011. The count study was conducted by the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The grand opening for the truck stop travel plaza is scheduled to take place on April 06, 2018.
